News from the Assembly Minority Leader

Statement From Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay

Will Barclay

After a great deal of consideration, I have decided that I will not seek re-election to the 120th Assembly District. I intend to step down as Minority Leader in the coming days, allowing for a smooth transition to new leadership early in the legislative session.

Oswego State softball knocks off top-seed Brockport for historic win

OS Softball The Oswego State softball team (17-18) made history in two ways on Thursday, May 2, after it defeated No. 1-seed Brockport (21-15) by the score of 9-0 in five innings.

The Lakers not only became the first No. 6-seed to knock off the top seed in the State University of New York Athletic Conference Tournament, but they also recorded their first SUNYAC post-season win in the process. Oswego State will face the loser of #3 Plattsburgh/#4 Geneseo at 9 a.m., Friday, May 3, in Brockport.

After two quick innings, Katie Bredin (Jr., Oneonta, N.Y.) led off the third with an infield single. The Golden Eagle infield and outfield moved closer to the plate in anticipation of Sammie Schroeter (Jr., Schenectady, N.Y.) laying down a sacrifice bunt. However, Schroeter pulled her bat and lifted a ball into left field just inside the foul line. Bredin came around to score from first, as Oswego State took a 1-0 lead.

The Lakers broke the game open in the fourth when Bredin singled to left field with Justine Abramowski (So., Levittown, N.Y.) and Nicole Ouellette (Sr., Alexis NascaCastleton, N.Y.) in scoring position. An error on the play led to Abramowski, Ouellette and Bredin touching home plate to put the Lakers ahead, 4-0.

Following a Brockport inning that saw Oswego State turn a traditional 6-4-3 double play, the Lakers loaded the bases with a single and two walks and one out. After a Bredin walk brought in Alexis Nasca (Fr., Hamburg, N.Y.) and a fly out, Tori Trovato (Fr., Fulton, N.Y.) cleared the bases when she laced a hit into the gap in right center field on a 1-2 pitch. Dee Apps (Jr., Camillus, N.Y.) followed with a double of her own to score Trovato, as Oswego State built a 9-0 advantage.

Nasca sat down the Golden Eagles in order in the bottom of the fifth to clinch the historic win for the Lakers.

Nasca pitched a gem in her eighth win of the season after allowing a hit in the first and second innings, while walking two and striking out one. Jaime Berger suffered the loss in the circle for Brockport giving up six runs on five hits over 4.1 innings. She also registered seven strikeouts and six walks.
