Oswego State women's ice hockey knocks off Stevenson, 5-1

OS HockeyThe Oswego State women's ice hockey team (9-8-1) controlled play from start to finish as the Lakers defeated Stevenson (5-8-1), 5-1, Saturday afternoon, Jan. 26, at the Campus Center Ice Arena.

Oswego State outshot the Mustangs 41-18, while Emma Smetaniuk (Jr., Frankford, Ontario) added a goal and two assists. Both squads square off again tomorrow at 3 p.m. to close out Pink the Rink weekend.
Melissa Seamont (Jr., North Bay, Ontario) gave the Lakers an early lead when she wristed a shot by Mustang goalie Mackenzie Bruch after creating space between her and a defender with slick deke after she crossed the blue line at 4:25 in the first period.
Near the end of the first period, Rachel Martell took a slap shot from the top of the zone that got through traffic past a screened Bridget Smith (So., Hamburg, N.Y.) to level the score at one while Stevenson was on the power play. Karly Vis earned an assist on the goal that sent the teams into the locker room tied at 1-1.
Olivia Boersen (Jr., Stratford, Ontario) put the Lakers back in front 46 seconds into the second period when she shook a defender between the circles before lifting her shot over Bruch's left shoulder after skating the length of the ice.
The lead grew to two goals at 13:34 when Emma Smetaniuk received a pass at neutral ice from Seamont and Chelsea Hunt (Jr., Brockport, N.Y.), skated by the defender at the blue line for an unabated path to the goalie and buried the puck in the back of the net.
Oswego State tacked on two more goals in the third period starting when Smetaniuk skated behind the net and fed Boersen, who was waiting on the doorstep for the easy goal at 9:28. Four minutes later with five seconds left on a Stevenson power play, Bailee Goodon's (Fr., Boissevain, Manitoba) slap shot from the left point sailed over Bruch's left shoulder into the back of the net. Mady Paul (Jr., Incline Village, Nevada) was credited with an assist on the play.
The Lakers ended the game 1-for-5 on the power play, while Stevenson went 1-for-3
Oswego State's Bridget Smith finished the game with 17 saves compared to 36 saves for Mackenzie Bruch.
