Oswego Volleyball Holds on to Beat Wells on the Road

Oswego Volleyball Holds on to Beat Wells on the Road

The Oswego State volleyball team beat host Wells College 3-2 (25-22, 25-20, 26-28, 24-26, 15-11) on Wednesday night. In a close match throughout, Oswego captured the first sets before never trailing in a decisive fifth set to collect a victory and move to 13-11 on the year. The Express falls to 15-7 on the year with Wednesday's loss.

Senior Emma Moriarty and sophomore Ariel Murawski had monster nights in the attacking department, each tying with a match-high 18 kills. Both hit at a similar percentage on the night, with the former recording a .244 success rate while the latter posted a .239 clip. For hitting percentage, however, the pair was outdone by senior teammate Meaghan Roefs' .265 with 13 kills. Isabella Winklestine also helped with attacking on the night, missing double-figure kills by just one.

The usual setting tandem of senior classmates Lindsey Champitto (20) and Lauren Edwards (19) were at it again against Wells, combing for 39 assists.

Moriarty paced Oswego in passing on the night as well, heading up a quartet of Lakers with double-figure digs. She finished with 22 while Rina Qelaj had 15, Edwards tallied 12 and libero Jessica Long totaled 11.

Roefs led the way defensively with four blocks, all coming on assists while sophomore Alison Sullivan matched that output but with a balanced two solo and two assists. Moriarty chipped in three blocks while Megan Russell, Lauren Fie and Murawski each had two.

Oswego will now head to its pivotal final SUNYAC Pool Play, hosted by Fredonia on Friday and Saturday. The Lakers will have three matches that will determine their postseason lives, starting at 5 p.m. on Friday with current-SUNYAC leader Brockport. Oswego goes into the weekend in a three-way tie for third place with the host Blue Devils and Oneonta, all at 4-2 in league action.
