The Oswego State women`s basketball team saw a valiant comeback fall just short 89-80 in overtime at Potsdam on Friday night. With the loss, Oswego falls to 6-16 overall and 2-13 in conference play while the Bears improve to 6-15, 4-10.
The Bears opened the contest on a 12-3 run which Oswego quickly cut to a manageable 12-9 deficit. Potsdam then began to build a lead, growing to as much as 14 when a Bear made a three with 5:46 left in the half, gaining a 33-19 advantage.
Oswego would not allow the game to get away, battling back to 37-32 with 50 seconds remaining in the period. The Lakers used an 8-0 spurt over 1:01 to bring the game within five points. Potsdam tacked on a late trey to send the teams to the break with the Bears leading 40-32.
Jenn Robbins led the Lakers in the period, scoring 10 points. The senior tallied nine of her points from beyond the arc, going 3-for-5 from distance in the first.
Entering the second half, Potsdam extended its lead to 13 with a quick five points. Oswego then put on a show, scoring 24 of the games next 27 points to take its first lead since the opening moments at 56-48 with 11:33 to play.
A Robbins layup at 5:12 pushed the Lakers to their largest lead of the game, taking a 68-58 advantage. Oswego could not hold the margin over the final five minutes, however, as Potsdam hit two clutch free throws in the final 25 seconds to send the game to extra time tied at 74-74.
The Bears outscored the Lakers 15-6 in the overtime to secure the victory.
Despite the loss, Robbins had a career day. The senior finished with career-highs for points (31) and 3-point field-goals made (7). She made seven of her just 10 attempts from deep and was over 50.0% from the field (11-for-23).
Heather Hebert barely missed a double-double, chipping in 15 points while grabbing nine boards. Haley Witchella led the Lakers on the glass, collecting 10 caroms to go with her six points. Also scoring in double figures for Oswego was Lauren Nunziato (10).
Oswego returns to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday when it competes at Plattsburgh.
