Freshman Josh Timpano has been named State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's ice hockey Player and Rookie of the Week while teammate Matt Zawadzki brings home Goalie of the Week honors for the week ending March 2, 2014.
Timpano had his most productive week of the season at the right time, gaining points in both of the Lakers postseason wins. Against Fredonia, Timpano helped Andrew Barton score the go-ahead goal on a 2-on-1 breakaway, feeding his teammate with a perfect pass which Barton buried past the Blue Devils goalie.
On Saturday, Timpano scored the game-winning goal, which was also his first-career goal, at Plattsburgh to push his team into the SUNYAC Championship game. The goal came halfway through the final period and was assisted by Barton.
Timpano joins teammates Kenny Neil (Jan. 13) and Mike Montagna (Jan. 6) in receiving Player of the Week honors this season.
Zawadzki earned two postseason wins to help Oswego reach the SUNYAC Championship game. His most impressive win was Saturday's 2-1 victory over Plattsburgh, allowing just one goal on the No. 2-seeded Cardinals' home ice. After the Lakers gained the lead halfway through the third, Zawadzki handled Plattsburgh's barrage of shots over the final 10 minutes, including a glove save on a blasted shot at 13:48 to retain the advantage.
This is Zawadzki's second time being honored as Goalie of the Week this season. He previously earned the honor back on December 9. He was also Rookie of the Week on January 6.
The men's hockey team will look to defend their 2012-13 SUNYAC title at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Geneseo's Ira S. Wilson Ice Arena at.
