Older adults at an increased risk for developing a severe illness related to COVID-19 are now able to be vaccinated.

Unfortunately, transportation is a barrier for many seniors. VTC is looking for volunteer drivers with a big heart to transport seniors to their vaccine appointments in Jefferson, Lewis, St. Lawrence, Oswego, Genesee, and Erie counties.

Volunteers create their own schedule and are offered reimbursement up to $.56 per mile. Signup to be a Volunteer Driver with VTC!

VOLUNTEER DRIVER QUALIFICATIONS

Be willing to transport individuals in your own vehicle; you have the opportunity to be reimbursed up to $0.56 per mile to cover the cost of fuel and vehicle repairs
Be willing to give a minimum of 4 hours per week; you pick the days and times
Have a clean driving record
Pass a thorough background check and in some cases, a drug screen

Safety tips for volunteer drivers in the age of COVID:

Wear a mask that covers your nose and mouth
Avoid close contact: you can do this by having the passenger sit in the back seat
Wash your hands for 20 seconds (use hand sanitizer if soap is not available) before and after each trip
Avoid touching your face and eyes with unwashed hands
Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and wear gloves while cleaning
Hard surfaces: Wipe with a 70% alcohol solution, a bleach solution, or any other EPA registered household disinfectant (use as directed)
Cloth seats: A 70% alcohol solution can be sprayed
Leather seats: A non-abrasive soap (such as Ivory) and water can be sprayed
Monitor your health for fever, chills, shortness of breath, and other symptoms of COVID

Many older adults are anxiously awaiting to be vaccinated to guard against COVID-19. Lack of transportation is an insurmountable stressor for individuals that are homebound, unable to drive due to a health condition, may not have family or friends able to drive them, or are unable to pay for costly private rides.
