Father & Daughter Braiding and Bonding Class

Father & Daughter Braiding and Bonding Class

On February 11th, Steven Phillips will be hosting a Father & Daughter Braiding and Bonding Class at the Oswego YMCA. The class will begin at 10 a.m until 11 a.m.

“Its not about the quality of the braid but rather about the quality of time spent between Father and Daughter,” Phillips said. Phillips also mentioned, “We think this is a unique way of having Dad making a connection with his daughter(s). William Corey, a local resident of Oswego and Father agreed with Phillips, “I think it's an excellent learning and bonding experience,” Corey said. Corey also admitted, “I literally have no idea how to braid.”

Phillips inspiration for the event came from a lifetime of being in a hair salon. “My Mother owned a hair salon that was attached to our house and one of my chores was to clean the salon.” Stated Phillips. He admitted he would watch his Mother and that she had a good time at doing what she did for a living. Phillips, whom owned Phillips Hairstyling Institute in Syracuse for 44 years saw positive effects through teaching. “This is a way for me to reach out and share some of my experience and passing it along by paying it forward,” said Phillips. Before Phillips purchased the school as his own, he was once a student of the Hairstyling Institute.

This is the first Father/Daughter Event Phillips will be hosting. In years past he has hosted free prom hairdos for underprivilage students, as well for 18 years setting up a mini salon and cut hair during The New York State Fair. “We would do about 6,000 haircuts at The Fair,” Phillips stated.

This event will show “simple braids,” as Phillips said. When Father/Daughters show up there will be stations with a mannequin and supplies. The braids Phillips will be demonstrating include the following: 2, 3, 4 and 5 Strand Ponytail, French and Dutch Braids will be available to learn. If you have a YMCA Membership the class is free. If you do not have YMCA Membership the class is only $5.
