Recently, iHeart Oswego found their way over to My Digital Discount's office to participate in their "Upgrade Oswego" campaign. iHeart Oswego founder, Victoria Usherwood Gailinas handed over her laptop to Doug Hare, IT Director for My Digital Discount.
"My focus is to let people know that we're here, we can help and are always willing to educate." IT specialist Hare said.
For as low as $99.99, My Digital Discount will personally remove your old hard drive and install a Solid State Drive that, according to My Digital Discount founder Matt Dawson, is up to 40 times faster than the standard hard drive.
"Generally someone would drop a computer off here to us and it takes about an hour for us, depending on how much memory is currently used, to finish the cloning process." Doug said. "I'll give you your computer with the installed SSD in it and your old hard drive just in case anything goes wrong and say 'have fun with your super-fast computer.'"
Gailinas, claimed her computer was running too slow for her daily activities.
"My computer handles thousands of graphics and pictures." Gailinas said. "Over time, my program responses have become slower and slower."
Hare went right to work, removing the original hard drive and began the cloning process.
"This is the part that takes the longest." said Hare.
The cloning finished at the one hour mark; Hare took the original hard drive and re-installed into Gailinas' laptop. Hare then asked Gailinas to turn on the computer, allow it to boot, open Google Chrome completely, then immediately close Chrome and shut down the computer. Total time to complete the task was three minutes, five seconds.
"Who could have imagined that three minutes could seem like forever?" Gailinas said. Hare then removed the original hard drive and replaced it with the cloned SSD. "Now repeat the process with the new drive." he said.
Gailinas turned the computer on, opened Google Chrome, closed it and then shut the computer down. "Fifty four seconds!" exclaimed Gailinas. "That's awesome and nearly seventy percent faster!" (insert video 1 &2)
Gailinas told Hare that while the new SSD drive was simply awesome, she did not want to lose the storage capacity of her original drive. The solution? Hare installed the original hard drive into an external storage device, complete with cover sleeve and USB port cord.
"This will increase your total capacity for storage and you won't lose the viability of your current hard drive." said Hare.
Now for the price point. To upgrade at the level iHeartOswego.com chose, a 256 SSD, the cost was $140.00. Add to that the external storage device with original drive installed: $20.00. Gailinas' computer now runs lightening fast with increased storage capacity, for a total of $160.00.
"That's an affordable investment and the frustration over lag time has disappeared." said Gailinas. "I suspect that My Digital Discount will be pretty busy this year, upgrading everyone in Oswego!"
