Oswego County Transfer Stations Now Accept Rechargeable and Lithium-Ion Batteries

Write a comment

The Oswego County Solid Waste Department announces that residents can now bring lithium-ion and other rechargeable batteries to its transfer stations to ensure they’re disposed of safely.

These batteries are accepted in a separate collection bin at each facility during regular hours of operation.

“We’ve experienced multiple fires at our transfer stations this year as a result of improperly disposed lithium-ion batteries,” said Oswego County Legislator Stephen M. Walpole, District 14, chairman of the Legislature’s Infrastructure, Facilities and Technology Committee. “These incidents are a serious reminder of the importance of handling and disposing of batteries safely.

“To help address this issue and provide residents with a safe and convenient disposal option, we are pleased to implement dedicated rechargeable battery collection boxes at every transfer station,” he continued. “We encourage all residents to do their part by properly disposing of batteries and following safe handling guidelines.”

Oswego County Solid Waste Director Michael Lutestanski, II, added, “It’s important to know what type of batteries your devices use, especially as lithium-ion batteries are found in many of the rechargeable and cordless products we use daily, including smartphones, laptops, tablets, e-bikes and scooters, gaming consoles and more.

“Before disposing of any battery-powered device, take a moment to identify the battery type and learn the proper disposal method,” he continued. “Never place lithium-ion batteries in your regular trash or recycling bin. Improperly discarded batteries can become damaged and create a serious fire hazard. Taking the time to properly identify, handle and dispose of lithium-ion batteries helps prevent fires, protect our employees and keep our facilities safe.”

Those unsure of what type of battery their device uses can view a battery identification guide online. Batteries can be prepared for safe disposal by individually bagging each battery in zip-seal bags or taping the positive end (terminal) using clear packing, electrical or duct tape.

Any type of rechargeable battery can be disposed of at the battery collection boxes located at all transfer stations. Boxes will have clear instructions on how to dispose of each battery type safely.

For a full list of the County’s transfer stations and hours of operation click on Oswego County Solid Waste.

The Oswego Transfer Station remains temporarily closed for repairs due to the fire that occurred there last month. The County aims to have the location re-opened by the end of November. Once re-opened, it will also accept lithium-ion batteries for disposal during regular operating hours.

In addition to transfer station facilities, lithium-ion batteries can also be recycled at the point of purchase, including stores such as Harbor Freight, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Target and Walmart. Look for collection boxes at participating retailers or click on https://batterynetwork.org/locator/ to find one near you. You can also visit Battery Recyclers of America to schedule a pick-up for lithium-ion batteries.

The Legislature’s Infrastructure, Facilities and Technology Committee oversees the Oswego County Solid Waste Department. In addition to Legislator Walpole, committee members include Vice Chairman Patrick Twiss, District 13; Frank Bombardo, District 7; John Martino, District 6; Christine Novak, District 16; Marie Schadt, District 19; and Michael Yerdon, District 1.
