According to the Department of Labor, the unemployment rate in Oswego County dropped from 9.1 percent to 6.9 percent since January this year, and many local citizens are seeking self-employment.

Rikki Walker and Brittini Morrison, who both work two jobs, also sell It Works. It Works is a health company that sells waist-shrinking wraps, and beauty products. Walker stated that the lack of professional/quality jobs in Oswego is “Very sad” and that “The cost of living continuously increases and not as many jobs are available.” Walker has been with It Works for four months, and said that the extra money has been able to help her pay off other credit cards. Morrison, who just joined, agreed that “The extra cash does help.”

Sandi Beshures is currently a waitress and started selling Mary Kay products in 2009. Beshures got into the business after sitting in a conference call with Mary Kay and said it was “A no brainer not to sign up.” She knew both women and men use some sort of skin care products and that buying directly from her would be best for everyone.

“They don't have to struggle through the store experience trying to find the right product because with me they can try before they buy to make sure it's what they really want,” said Beshures. Beshures feels that we pick where we live, and that sometimes there aren’t a million job opportunities.

“If you want to work somewhere like the plants,” Beshures said, “it is most definite you need to know someone.” By starting up with Mary Kay, Beshures said she learned so much about running a business, leadership and marketing, as well as personal growth. The extra income helped her put two of her children through private school, as well as helped her family tremendously with the cost of surgeries for Beshures’ third child.

Frank Heagerty helps out at his father’s store Heagerty’s Hotspot. Heagerty compared Oswego to Lake George because both cities are on the water and have great potential, but the vast difference is the job market. Heagerty is also an entrepenuer, and offers personal training through Bodyshock Fitness. He started personal training one year ago, and stated that “The extra income has allowed him to expand his gym to better himself and others.”

Oswego is the second highest county in unemployment rate in the state, following the Bronx at 8.0% according to the Department of labor. The percentage is decreasing, but the City of Oswego still faces a lack of quality professional jobs. From the looks of it, these entrepreneurs are thriving and changing Oswego’s economic forecast.
