Due to the alarming increase of excessive littering, a concerned local has decided to do all he can to help clean up the city during his daily runs.
Vinnie Alton likes being able to run around Oswego and beautiful Lake Ontario. Lately, Alton has noticed an alarming increase of excessive littering and is not pleased by it. “Littering really bugs me.” Alton said.
Alton runs two and a half miles every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. He brings two grocery sized bags with him and collects trash and recyclables along his run. Afterwards he sorts through the recycling and garbage he had collected along the way.
Alton had expressed incredulity at the refuse. “How hard is it to find a trash can instead of polluting public space, you know?”Alton said. Monday he posted a photo on his Facebook account of the trash he picked up on his run.
His photo had drawn support in the form of several likes and comments from local friends about what he is doing. On Wednesday Alton stated that “Two bags was not enough, I needed more.” Alton said that he sees an increase in trash/littering during the holiday season such as this past Independence Day weekend.
Currently, Alton is looking to start up a group run to get others involved in his run/clean up campaign. Alton stated he runs to unwind and would like where he runs to be “Free of garbage.” Most of the trash he picks up is “A lot of fast food bags, wrappers, and cigarette boxes.”
If you would like to join in his campaign, or know anyone interested, Vinnie Alton’s email is VinceAlton@gmail.com. He is aspiring to get as many participants as possible, and “hope[s] someday there’s nothing left to clean up.”
