Local author, Susan Peterson Gateley, will be the guest speaker at the final history lecture of the 2013 season, at the H. Lee White Marine Museum and Maritime Center.

Her topic, "Maritime Tales of Lake Ontario" will be free to the public, at the museum at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 12.Harbour at Niagara 1811hig res

In the preface of her book "Maritime Tales of Lake Ontario," Gateley states that "shipwrecks are part of Lake Ontario's history. But so are innovation, wealth building, heroism and bungling on a grand scale." Come hear this seasoned sailor's accounts of "adventure, forgotten islands, shipwrecks and more from the Lake of Shining Waters." Copies of the book are available in the museum's Treasure Chest gift shop.

This program will present a brief perspective on some wise and not so wise choices made by mariners, business men, civil engineers and 19th century generals. Specific topics will include shipwrecks and the bad choices that caused them, how our decisions have affected the lake's fisheries and how a decision and an October gale may have changed history by possibly determining the outcome of the War of 1812.

Gateley has a master's degree in fisheries science and has worked in Massachusetts and on the Chesapeake Bay as an ichthyoplankton taxonomist. She holds a Coast Guard license to 25 tons and operates Silver Waters Sailing, offering day trips, overnight excursions, sailing instruction and live-aboard courses aboard a classic 32-foot sloop on Fair Haven Bay.

The H. Lee White Marine Museum is located at the end of the West First Street Pier, in Oswego's Historic Maritime District.
