Morningstar Residential Care Center, in Oswego, enjoyed an innovative and exciting week in celebration of National Nursing Home Week (NNHW), May 12-18.
"The national theme was 'Team Care,' so we celebrated with a sports theme to show our team spirit through a lot of different sporting events," Sharon Kirk, activities director, said.
The calendar of events was loaded with fun and entertaining competition and games for both staff and residents alike.
"NNHW's theme recognizes residents and patients in long-term and post-acute care settings, the dedicated staff who care for them and the value of care planning where everyone 'pitches in' for optimal outcomes," Kirk explained.
The week kicked off with a trip to a Syracuse Chief's games and continued with a 'Hoops' party, tabletop bowling, sports bingo, a putt-putt contest outside, a bowling pizza and wing party, sports trivia questions throughout the week with a chance to win lottery tickets and Happy Hour. Wednesday was Staff Appreciation Day, which included Pig Roast / Clam with a loaded potato bar and gift basket giveaways all day.
"Tuesday was an absolute riot with a three-on-three wheelchair basketball game in our dining room with staff showing the residents just how coordinated – or not – we were in our wheelchairs," Kirk said with a laugh. "They were hysterical watching us!"
The week culminated with a chance for both staff and residents to throw a baseball to dunk Morningstar president and administrator, Joseph Murabito.
"It was a fantastic week," Kirk said.
