Exelon Generation’s Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station recently donated enough non-perishable food to feed more than 300 children through the Oswego chapter of Blessings in a Backpack, an organization that collects food for school-aged children in need.

Volunteers pack the bags and deliver them to the schools prior to breaks when students won’t receive school-provided meals.

Spearheaded by two of Nine Mile Point’s leaders, Joanne Johnson, supply chain manager, and Harry Greeney, security operations manager, the nuclear energy facility raised $3,000 to purchase food. The donations will go a long way toward feeding children over the April break.

"We are very grateful to the employees at Nine Mile Point for their generous support," said Missy Russell, Program Coordinator for the Oswego chapter-Blessings in a Backpack. "To have had so much raised so quickly was amazing and it was truly a blessing to our program.”

“Exelon Generation and the employees of Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station are proud to support the important work of community organizations such as Blessings in a Backpack,” said Pete Orphanos, site vice president. “I am tremendously proud of our employees’ ongoing commitment to giving back to our community and helping to make a difference.”

Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station is located seven miles northeast of Oswego and 50 miles north of Syracuse. The station can produce more than 1,937 megawatts of carbon-free electricity – enough to power nearly two million homes.
