Oswego Girl Scouts Give Back to Community

Oswego Girl Scouts Give Back to Community

Girl Scouts of all ages in the Oswego area recently held a Leader/Daughter Girl Scouts Give Back night at their December Service Unit meeting.

Nearly 80 activity bags were assembled during the meeting and delivered to the emergency department of the Oswego Hospital. The project was made possible in part through a generous contribution from the Children’s Board of Oswego. The troops also donated small toys, books and activities to be placed in zip lock bags for the children who come into the emergency room at our local hospital.

The girls, who ranged in age from 6 to 16 years old, were excited to be part of the larger Girl Scouts Give Back national initiative that encourages Girl Scouts to reach out and find ways to serve the community.

“A year ago, I spent some time in a hospital and so I know what it is like,” said Sarah Westcott (pictured right), a junior Girl Scout from Troop 10566. “I'm happy to help give the kids who come in something fun to do. Even better, the holidays are a perfect time to give kids activity bags like this.”  IMG 5671

The Activity Bag program is part of an ongoing Oswego Girl Scout project that made its debut in May of this year.  All together, Girl Scouts in Oswego have been responsible for crafting close to 200 activity bags for 2014.

Girl Scouts in the Oswego City area have witnessed a recent resurgence in popularity this year with an over-all increase in membership and active troops.  This bucks against current national trends which have seen a decrease in membership over the past two years. Girls in the community can join a scout troop at any time of the year and are encouraged to do so.

If you are interested in joining a troop in the Oswego area or possibly leading a troop of your own, call the Girl Scout Council office of NYPENN Pathways Cicero Service Center at (315) 698-9400 or look them up on the web at www.gsnypenn.org.
