In anticipation of the opening of two new science facilities at SUNY Oswego this fall, the college will showcase the sciences in its New York State Fair exhibit Tuesday, Aug. 27, in the State University's tent.

The human-computer interaction program's robots will have a repeat engagement from 5-9 p.m. SUNY staff said the humanoid robots, which dance and talk, were among the most popular exhibits in the SUNY tent at last year's fair. Robots allow Oswego's computer science and engineering students to connect theory with practice and explore a range of robotics-related fields.
The college's new Richard S. Shineman Center for Science, Engineering and Innovation and Rice Creek Biological Field Station will be the subject of Oswego's opening presentation, ongoing from 9 a.m. to noon.
The Shineman Center is the new home of Oswego's programs in biological sciences, biochemistry, chemistry, cognitive science, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, software engineering, geology, human-computer interaction, mathematics, meteorology, physics and zoology. It houses specialized labs and research centers as well as a greenhouse and a planetarium. The field station is a 300-acre living laboratory that also features a new observatory.
Built to LEED Gold standards, the new facilities feature the largest geothermal ground source system for heating and cooling in the state and banks of solar roof panels. The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green building certification program is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of environmentally friendly buildings.

Meteorology professor Scott Steiger and the student Meteorology Club will take over from 12-5 p.m. to present their tornado-chasing research in the Midwest and lake-effect snowstorm studies at SUNY Oswego's main campus.

Visitors to Oswego's table throughout the day will be able to enter raffles for Oswego alumni and student sweatshirts. The day's presentations are organized by the college's Office of Alumni and Parent Relations and Office of Admissions.

The State University of New York tent will highlight a different selection of its 64 campuses each day of the fair, Aug. 22 to Sept. 2, each with interactive exhibits.
