It is that time again when we honor the women in our lives whom we call “Mother.” Whether it be a biological mother, adoptive mother, foster mother, or a “fill-in” mother, we all have them.
With Mother’s Day upon us, iHeart would like to offer a little advice on how to treat your mother on this grand occasion.
There is a difference between the generations of mothers. So, Dads out there with young children, this one is for you. Mothers are tired. Maybe a nice family breakfast would be wonderful to have with kids in tow to a restaurant or even at home. And let me just say, mom does not need to cook or clean up after it. If you don’t like to do the cooking or clean up, I can suggest a buffet at the Kallet Theater in Pulaski or Curtis Manor in Oswego. Both offer a great brunch option for the day. Spending time with her children is always a priority, but she needs to have a regeneration too. I suggest a nice gift card, perhaps to her favorite store, or better yet, to the Aqua Spa in Oswego for some long overdue relaxation. Then, maybe an afternoon alone so she can spend it. A nice homemade gift from the youngsters is always a plus. This Friday, Fulton’s YMCA offers a “Mugs for Mom” program where kids design a mug just for their mom. This gift would be precious to any parent. Dinner on the table when she returns would be a bonus. Fancy or simple, most mothers just want to know that you care. You won’t believe how appreciative a young mother feels after a little special care. This reward will, no doubt, be your reward, too.
Young single moms need care, too. If you have too much going on Mother’s Day, you could offer the day before to a friend. Offer to help out with childcare and give them a couple of hours to themselves. Make an easy meal for them to pop in the oven at their convenience. Small simple gifts speak volumes to moms who are trying to do it on their own. A gesture of kindness goes a long way.
Older mothers like different things. Flowers, fresh from Maida’s Floral or to plant from Ontario Orchards in Oswego or Paine’s Greenhouse in Fulton, whether young or old, are always welcomed. But older moms mostly want time. They tend to miss their children and want to see you, hear from you, and enjoy some company. An hour with your mother is going to give her the refresh she needs. Take the grandkids with you, Mom loves to see them, too. Take her to brunch or dinner. She would like the Kallet Theater or other places like RFH’s Hideaway in Phoenix, Bridie Manor in Oswego, Rudy’s, or if you like Mexican, the 5-star restaurant in Fulton called El Mezquite De Luna at the end of Route 481. Can’t beat any of those choices. Looking for a gift for the older mother? A coupon for her favorite hairdresser is a great gift idea. Man in the Moon in Oswego offers great options for the sweets lover and River’s End, for book lovers. Sometimes just doing something that she needs to have done and can’t do is the answer. Give her a promise to fix something she needs fixed. You can do it on Mother’s Day or shortly after; but don’t wait too long or the list will grow. Show her that special love that she deserves. Let her know you are paying attention to her. The possibilities are endless.
Some Mothers live far away from their children. A nice card in the mail can brighten her day, but a zoom call can brighten her week. Spend time on the phone telling her about all the things going on in your life. Ask about her life as well. You might find your mom to be more interesting as she gets older. Sharing, even with a phone call, will make her feel worthy and loved.
Mother’s Day is a great day to just take care of the mothers in your life. Be sure to treat her right and with utmost respect. Someday, she will be gone, and you will wish you spent more time honoring the woman who raised you. Take from this author who misses her mother more than just on Mother’s Day, you will have wanted to spend more simple moments with her. For this day, and every day, be sure to take special care of your mother.
