The Oswego County Historical Society will host the first lecture of the 2017 lecture series on Sunday, April 30 at 1:30 pm at the historic Ladies Home of Oswego, located at 43 E.Utica St.. The event is free and open to the public.

A presentation highlighting the 145th anniversary of the Ladies Home of Oswego will be given by Justin White, board president of the historical society. The program will be held in conjunction with the Ladies Home open house which will follow the lecture and refreshments will be served.

"Guest will have a chance to learn about the amazing history of the Ladies Home and also have an opportunity to view interior rooms and meet residents," said Linda Chrisman, activities coordinator for the Ladies Home. "We are pleased to coordinate a program with the historical society to showcase this wonderful local landmark."

The Ladies Home was formed in February of 1872 by a group of prominent citizens to address the growing need for care of elderly women. It was initially organized as the Home for the Homeless and many years later renamed the Old Ladies Home and now known as the Ladies Home. The building was designed by Andrew Jackson Warner of Rochester, NY. Warner was a prominent and prolific architect who also designed the Richardson-Bates House, the headquarters of the historical society. The Ladies Home building was completed in 1877. Due to its rare architectural style it is listed on the National of Historic Places and is part of the Washington Square Historic District.

"This remarkable community service was made possible by generous citizens during that era. They came together to raise the funds for building this ornate structure to be a comfortable home for those in need of help," said White."It was a major undertaking and long-term investment by the first founders who all volunteered to make it work. It is incredible that it still retains the original atmosphere and legacy."

The Oswego County Historical Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the rich history of the county. The society maintains and operates the Richardson-Bates House Museum, a historic landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The museum is open to the public on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 1-5 p.m, and other days by appointment. For more information contact the museum during regular hours at 315-343-1342.
