If you want to touch the past, touch a rock.  If you want to touch the present, touch a flower.  If you want to touch the future, touch a life.

Have you ever considered becoming a volunteer tutor?  Do something that will truly make a difference. It opens up a new world full of opportunities for an adult learner.  No one who achieves success does so without acknowledging the help of others.  Our adult learners acknowledge this help with gratitude.

Oswego County Opportunities, Inc (OCO) Literacy Volunteers Program is offering a tutor orientation for its 2014 fall session on Wednesday, Oct. 15 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  The tutor orientation will be held at OCO’s Midtown Plaza Offices located at 75 E. First St., Oswego.  Parking is available on the lower level (entrance on East First Street). The orientation session provides an overview of what is expected of tutors and the types of literacy services offered at Literacy Volunteers.  Upon completion of the orientation, you can decide if you’d like to become a volunteer tutor.

No prior teaching experience is necessary to become a tutor, but volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent.  All prospective volunteer tutors must attend the orientation session prior to enrolling in training.  Tutors are trained to instruct through an 8th grade reading level.  Training, resources and continual supports are all provided to our volunteer tutors.

The Literacy Volunteers Face Book page has Tutor LitBits to view.  Tutor LitBits are testimonials from Literacy Volunteers tutors sharing their experiences about teaching an adult learner to read. To register for orientation e-mail lvoswego@oco.org.  For more information call 342-8839 or visit www.oco.org/education
