Community members, organizations, and volunteers gathered at Breitbeck Park on Friday, May 15 for the “Planting Seeds of Kindness” initiative, a collaborative effort led by the Oswego County Suicide Prevention Coalition in recognition of May being Mental Health Awareness Month.

The initiative brought together individuals of all ages to plant colorful handmade flowers throughout the park, each carrying messages of encouragement, hope, kindness, and support. The flowers were created by local libraries, nonprofit organizations, businesses throughout Oswego County, members of the Coalition, and community partners committed to promoting mental wellness and suicide prevention awareness.

Volunteers participating in the planting effort included the City of Oswego Waterfront Crew, Mozaic (formerly Oswego Industries) staff and support individuals, The DeSens House, OCO Clubhouse, and the Greater Oswego-Fulton Chamber of Commerce staff and Ambassador Committee, alongside additional community supporters and families. City of Oswego Mayor Corradino joined in for the cause as well.

The project aims to inspire simple acts of kindness and encourage conversations surrounding mental health throughout the community. Community members visiting Breitbeck Park are encouraged to take a flower to keep for themselves or pass along to someone who may need encouragement, support, or a reminder that they are valued and not alone.

“This initiative is about connection, compassion, and reminding people that even small gestures can make a meaningful impact,” said organizers from the Oswego County Suicide Prevention Coalition. “The overwhelming community involvement demonstrates how deeply Oswego County cares about supporting mental health awareness and one another.”

The Oswego County Suicide Prevention Coalition continues to work collaboratively with local organizations, municipalities, and community leaders to raise awareness, reduce stigma surrounding mental health, and promote suicide prevention resources across Oswego County.

For more information about mental health resources and suicide prevention efforts in Oswego County, community members are encouraged to connect with participating organizations and local support agencies.
