Calling all word wizards! Registration is now open for Scrabble® Fest. The 8th Annual Diane Falise Memorial Scrabble® Fest, a benefit for Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County, takes place on Friday, Sept. 19, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Oswego Elks Lodge #271.
"One of Oswego County's most entertaining fund raisers, Scrabble Fest offers devotees of the game Scrabble the opportunity to enjoy an evening of friendly competition, and more. Scrabble Fest is much more than just another fundraiser. It's also a way to raise awareness of Literacy Volunteers and our efforts to combat the issue of illiteracy in Oswego County," Meg Henderson, coordinator of OCO's Literacy Volunteers Program, said.
"The fun, fast-paced competition draws teams from all over the county," Henderson said. Teams consist of 4 players, who work together to create words during 3 turns in each of the four 20-minute rounds of play. Team scores will be tallied and the top three teams will be awarded prizes.
To add to the fun of the event, teams will have the opportunity to take advantage of the new Golden Tile option. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Literacy Volunteers, a limited number of Golden Tiles, which play as a blank tile and can be used for the letter of their choice, will be available for purchase. Additionally, the team that obtains the highest pledge amount will be awarded 100 bonus points to their score.
Henderson said Scrabble Fest will also host a silent auction featuring an assortment of items donated by local merchants who support Literacy Volunteers, a raffle for a lottery ticket board, and a 50/50 drawing.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with games beginning promptly at 6:30 p.m. Entry fee is $100 per team and includes light refreshments. The cost for spectators, those who want to attend but not compete in the event, is $15 (this fee includes light refreshments). Cash bar will be available. All proceeds from Scrabble Fest will benefit Literacy Volunteers.
