The 2014 Capital One Academic All-District® Basetball Teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), have been released to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Scott Buniak of the Oswego State baseball team has been selected as First Team All-District 3 as one of just four outfielders selected in the region.
Buniak earns the award not only for his on-the-field statistics but his ability in the classroom. A wellness management major, Buniak holds a 3.51 grade-point average through December 2013. At the 2014 Honors Convocation he was awarded the Donald Snygg Award by Oswego State for his efforts as a scholar-athlete.
Much like the senior's dedication as a student, Buniak's athletic achievements have been well-documented. The Clifton Park native was named to the All-SUNYAC First Team after his junior campaign before being recognized as an All-New York Region Third Team member by D3baseball.com. This season, Buniak is on the same path, leading the Lakers with a .385 batting average, 40 hits, 16 stolen bases and 7 doubles.
Oswego and Buniak have earned the No. 3 seed in the SUNYAC Championship and will face No. 2 Brockport at 3:30 p.m. on Friday at Cortland. With at least two games guaranteed in the tournament and five other games remaining on the regular-season schedule, the centerfielder needs just 16 hits to take over the College's career record for hits and only three stolen bases to own that career mark.
First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
