News from the Assembly Minority Leader

Statement From Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay

Will Barclay

After a great deal of consideration, I have decided that I will not seek re-election to the 120th Assembly District. I intend to step down as Minority Leader in the coming days, allowing for a smooth transition to new leadership early in the legislative session.

Garrett Scores Six as Lakers Earn First League Win

The Oswego State women's lacrosse team earned its first conference victory of the season with a convincing 17-6 win over Potsdam at Laker Turf Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. With the triumph, the Lakers improve to 3-5 on the year and 1-1 in the SUNYAC while the Bears drop to 2-6, 0-2.

After a Toni Laneve goal less than a minute into the contest, Potsdam tallied two goals to take what proved to be its only advantage of the day. The Lakers responded to the deficit by scoring six-straight goals – and eight of the next nine – to hold a sizable 9-3 lead at the break. In the second half, it was all Oswego, outscoring the Bears 8-3, including runs of four- and three-consecutive goals.

Four Lakers had multiple-goal games, led by Montana Garrett. The freshman posted a new career-high with six scores, which is the most by a Laker in a single-game during the 2017 campaign. Laneve was close behind with four goals of her own followed by senior Kendall Appelbaum's three. Rounding out the quartet was junior Gemma O'Kane with a pair of tallies.

Despite just one goal, Teresa Shattuck continued her incredible distribution rate, racking up six assists for a game-high seven points. The sophomore now has 34 helpers on the year and her per game average (4.0) ranks second nationally as of Monday, April 3.

Freshman Sami Duncan scored her first-collegiate goal unassisted to the cap the Lakers day with 5:23 left in regulation.

Shattuck and Appelbaum were crucial on the draw, each controlling four while senior captain Kelsey Henderson won two.

On defense, Nicole Granteed and Danielle Walked caused two turnovers apiece and combined for six ground balls. Shattuck paced the team in the ground ball category, scooping six herself.

In goal, Angela Ponto was solid all afternoon, turning away 11 Potsdam shots on-goal while allowing just five scores. Elianna Sanchez relieved the junior for the final 5:23, her second collegiate appearance.

Oswego will return to the field at 3 p.m. on Saturday as it hosts conference opponent Oneonta for Senior Day.
