News from the Assembly Minority Leader

Statement From Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay

Will Barclay

After a great deal of consideration, I have decided that I will not seek re-election to the 120th Assembly District. I intend to step down as Minority Leader in the coming days, allowing for a smooth transition to new leadership early in the legislative session.

Late Run Leads to Laker Loss

OS Basketball

The Oswego State women's basketball team took a tough 73-65 loss to Brockport on Tuesday night in Max Ziel Gymnasium. With the loss, the Lakers drop to 5-10 overall and 3-5 in SUNYAC contest while the Golden Eagles improve to 4-10, 2-5.

Oswego and Brockport traded baskets in their first possessions before the Lakers went on a quick 8-0 run to lead 10-2. The Lakers kept the momentum throughout the opening half, leading by as many as eight on three different occasions. Brockport continued to battle back in the first 20 minutes, making it a three-point game at 37-34 heading to the break.

In the second half, Oswego and Brockport were tied at 39-39 just under two minutes into the period when Oswego took control. Over the next 8:26, the Lakers created a 19-5 run to hold a 14-point advantage at 58-44 with 9:35 to play in the game. Oswego could not maintain its run over the final nine minutes, however, as the Golden Eagles finished on a 29-7 run to secure the eight-point victory.

Alisha Jacobs had an outstanding shooting day, going 6-for-12 from the field, including 4-for-5 (80.0%) from beyond the arc, to lead the Lakers with 19 points. The freshman was not just offensive minded, wreaking havoc defensively as she took away a career- and game-high six steals.

Adding to Jacobs' night in the scoring column were three teammates, as Rachel Windhausen (13), Mary Mazzella (10) and Heather Hebert (10) each finished in double digits. Windhausen missed another double-double by just one rebound, grabbing a team-best nine boards off the glass. Mazzella and Hebert also chipped in on the boards, gathering seven and six, respectively.

As a team, Oswego more than doubled the amount of steals than its opponent (15-7), resulting in 23 points.

The Lakers will now have a nine-day layoff until they return to the court for a 7 p.m. contest on Friday, Jan 30 at New Paltz.
