The Oswego State men's cross country team started the 2016 campaign at the SUNY Poly Short Course Invitational, claiming second place out of 11 squads. Three Lakers grabbed a spot in the top 10, with Dylan McCarthy coming in at No. 1.
McCarthy, the SUNYAC's reigning Rookie of the Year, wasted no time picking up where he left off from a year ago. The sophomore fended off a gaggle of Oneonta Red Dragon runners who finished in places 2-6. McCarthy's closest competition was Oneonta's Devin Akerly, crossing the finish line exactly one second ahead of his Red Dragon opponent (19:27.0).
Securing spots in the top-10 were classmates Colin Greenseich at seventh and Justin Sommer in ninth. The juniors clocked in at 19:34.9 and 19:41.4, respectively. All three of the Lakers' top-10 finishers broke the school's previous 6K record of 19:44.0, set by Nicholas Montesano in 2014. McCarthy, Greenseich and Sommer now sit in the top three spots on the all-time list.
Rounding out the Lakers' top five times were Timothy Olmsted and Andrew Spagnuolo. Olmsted – a sophomore – broke the 20 minute mark at 19:54.1 while Spagnuolo – a senior – recorded a 20:27.4.
Oswego's next meet will be its lone home showing, hosting several schools for the 26th Annual Oswego State Invitational at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
