News from the Assembly Minority Leader

Statement From Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay

Will Barclay

After a great deal of consideration, I have decided that I will not seek re-election to the 120th Assembly District. I intend to step down as Minority Leader in the coming days, allowing for a smooth transition to new leadership early in the legislative session.

Oswego Drops Defensive Battle at Rochester

The Oswego State women's lacrosse team fell 6-3 in a defensive battle at the University of Rochester on Monday afternoon. Oswego is now 2-4 on the year while the Yellowjackets improve to 4-1.

The standouts both ways were the goalkeepers. UR's Conley Ernst made eight saves on 11 shots that were on target. Oswego had 15 shots overall. Laker goalkeeper Angela Ponto made 16 saves on 22 shots at her net.

Oswego scored all three of its goals in the first 14 minutes – and the passing wizardry of Teresa Shattuck set up each goal. Shattuck found Montana Garrett four yards away from the crease just 1:27 into the game. Rochester tied it when Jamison Seabury stutter-stepped through the arc and shot low for the tying goal with 20:28 left in the half. Madeline Mulholland's free position goal came with 17 minutes left to make it 2-1 Yellowjackets.

Shattuck went back to work. On the ensuing attack after the UR goal, she held the ball on the right attacking side until Gemma O'Kane burst into open space. O'Kane scored from close range allowing the Lakers to even the game at 2-2. They went back in front immediately. Oswego won the draw and Garrett scored her second goal of the match with 15:52 left on the first half clock. The assist was Shattuck's 27th of the season.

Rochester regrouped and scored the two late goals to forge a one-goal lead at the half. Eleven minutes into the second half, Rochester made it 5-3. Mara Karpp got the ball on the left attacking side and shoved a pass into the arc which Marina Kern turned home for a 5-3 lead.

Oswego's defense was physical. The Lakers conceded 14 free position shots, but only two goals. The standouts were Nicole Granteed, Marissa Engelbrecht and Danielle Walker. When the Lakers counterattacked on a clear, they looked primarily for Garrett whose speed pushed the ball downfield at 14-for-18 clip. Oswego also collected 13 ground balls, one more than its opponent. Both teams won five draws. Toni Laneve, Kelsey Henderson, Walker and Ponto each finished with one caused turnover.

The Lakers play at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Brockport to open SUNYAC action.
