The Oswego State golf team slid into second place at the second round of the Empire 8 Championship on Sunday afternoon at Kanon Valley Country Club. Oswego shaved nine strokes off its first round score, jumping Stevens Institute of Technology, who it trailed by just one after Saturday.
This is the first year Oswego has participated as part of the Empire 8 Conference, and after two rounds in the spring to close out the tournament, the champion will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. Through two rounds, St. John Fisher College leads with a plus-nine, two-round total of 585 (294, 291) with the Lakers at a plus-37, 613 (311, 302) for second. Stevens is nine strokes back of Oswego in third.
Nick Gramuglia had a great Sunday, shooting a one-over 73 to help pace the Lakers. On Oswego, Gramuglia only trails Corey Marshall, who stayed consistent over the fall portion of the tournament. Marshall shot a 75 on Saturday and a 76 on Sunday for sole possession of fifth place (plus-7, 151). Gramuglia is in a tie for sixth with a two-round total of 153.
Also in the top 10 after two days is Sean Paul Owen, who is in a four-way tie for eighth with a 154. Owen was balanced both days, scoring a 77 for each round.
Just one stroke out of the top 10 – in a two-way tie for 12th – is Erik Schleicher. Schleicher tallied a 79 on Saturday but knocked off three strokes on Sunday for a 76.
Rounding out the Lakers in the top 20 is Stu Winn, who used 81 strokes each day to own 20th place by himself heading into the spring.
Oswego will return to action at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at the 48th Annual Elmira College Fall Invitational. The spring rounds of the Empire 8 Championship will be held on April 21-22.
