In their long awaited home opener, the Oswego State men's and women's swimming and diving teams earned a split against Buffalo State Saturday afternoon, Jan. 23, at Laker Pool.
On the men's side, the Lakers topped the Bengals by a score of 140-77, while the Oswego State women fell short by a final tally of 133-92.
The Oswego State men got off to a tremendous start, placing first and second in the 200 medley relay. The winning relay team of Adam Weber (Sr., Clarence, N.Y.), Niklas Hesse (Fr., Stony Brook, N.Y.), Graham Burnell (Fr., Medina, Ohio) and Ben Palais (Jr., Rye, N.Y.) posted a time of 1:47.42.
A number of swimmers turned in stellar performances in the victory. Burnell led the way with wins in the 200 IM (2:10.53) and the 200 fly (2:13.93). Tom Schmid (Jr., Liverpool, N.Y.) finished first in the 1000 freestyle in a time of 10:38.66. Andrew Minnick (Jr., Latham, N.Y.) won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:50.76. Austin Nau (Fr., Rochester, N.Y.) placed first in the 50 freestyle (22.66), while Matt Pamlanye (Jr., Holbrook, N.Y.) captured the 100 freestyle (50.54). Weber also posted a winning time of 2:08.23 in the 200 back.
The Laker women also started the meet strong as the team of Tracey Hagan (Fr., Burnt Hills, N.Y.), Katie Flood (Jr., Hastings-on-the-Hudson, N.Y.), Sabia Filiaci (So., Schenectady, N.Y.), and Ashley Rode (Jr., Hilton, N.Y.) took first place in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:59.34. Flood would go on to swim to victory in the 200 IM, posting a time of 2:25.26. Rode finished first in the 200 back with a time of 2:27.78. Hagan also earned an individual win in the 200 breast (2:42.66).
The Oswego State divers had an impressive meet as well, sweeping the men's events. Justin Berrios (So., Bronx, N.Y.) took first on the 3-meter board with a score of 237.00. In the 1-meter event, Jacob Bailey (Fr., North Rose, N.Y.) turned in a winning score of 242.25.
The Lakers will be in action again on Wednesday, Jan. 23, as they host Cortland at 4 p.m.
