Senior Meagan Stover (Lake George, N.Y.) posted career highs in points and rebounds to help the Oswego State women's basketball team (4-0, 1-0 SUNYAC) remain perfect on the season following with a 56-48 win over Plattsburgh (2-2, 0-1) Friday night at Max Ziel Gymansium. Stover poured in 25 points and 12 rebounds to go along with three steals in the victory. The first half was a back-and-forth affair that saw five ties and four lead changes between the squads with neither team leading by more than five points at any point. Kathleen Payne scored two of her team-high 17 points on the final Plattsburgh possession of the stanza to give the Cardinals a 25-24 lead at the break.
In the second half, Plattsburgh established a 30-26 lead with 17:03 remaining after a Catherine Cassidy putback. However, the next trip up the floor Stover drained a trey to fuel nine straight Laker points over the next two minutes to give Oswego State a 35-30 edge.
It would be Plattsburgh turn to go on a run following the Laker streak, as it scored the next 11 points to go ahead, 41-35, with 13:16 left to play.
Oswego State stayed within striking distance, and gradually chipped into the deficit until it seized the lead for good with over four minutes to play after a Stover layup to make the score 47-46. The Lakers, then, closed out the game with a 11-2 run courtesy of going 5-for-6 from the charity stripe late in the game.
Lauren Nunziato (Jr., West Sand Lake, N.Y.) chipped in 13 points to join Stover in double figures, while Evelyn Josbena (Sr., Solvay, N.Y.) added eight points. Payne pulled down nine rebounds to go along with her 17 points, while Catherine Cassidy contributed 11 points for the visitors.
Plattsburgh converted 16 Oswego State turnovers into 21 points compared to the Lakers, who converted 24 Cardinal turnovers into just 11 points.
News from the Assembly Minority Leader
Statement From Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay
After a great deal of consideration, I have decided that I will not seek re-election to the 120th Assembly District. I intend to step down as Minority Leader in the coming days, allowing for a smooth transition to new leadership early in the legislative session.
Oswego State women's basketball keeps winning ways with 56-48 victory
