The Oswego State wrestling team (3-4) bounced back from a 31-3 loss to seventh-seeded Heidelberg to defeat Gettysburg, 32-12, and Rhode Island College, 24-21, to advance to the second day of the Budd Whitehill Duals hosted by Lycoming College.
The Lakers square off against eighth-seeded John Carroll at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11.
Justin Patus (Sr., Sachem, N.Y.) was the lone Oswego State wrestler to record points against Heidelberg at 157 pounds when he defeated Aaron Banko, 10-6.
In the next match against Gettysburg, Johnny Marquez (Fr., Queens, N.Y.), Omar Santiago (Sr., Huntington Station, N.Y.), Quamaine Thomas (So., Uniondale, N.Y.), and Dustin Jones (Fr., Palmyra, N.Y.) won the opening four bouts to get the Lakers off on the right foot. Blake Fisher (Sr., Seaford, N.Y.) registered a pin in 41 seconds into the second period at 165 pounds before the Lakers closed out the match with pins from Andrew Cole (Fr., Uniondale, N.Y.) and Jake DeBuyser (Fr., Rochester, N.Y.) at 197 and 285 pounds, respectively.
Oswego State dropped the first three bouts against Rhode Island College, but the Lakers won five of the final seven bouts, including two forfeits, to earn the victory. Patus had a pivotal pin at 157 pounds when he pinned John Costa with 20 seconds remaining in the first period.
