The Oswego State women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to SUNY Potsdam Saturday, Oct. 5, at Laker Soccer Field.
Oswego's loss drops the Lakers to 7-4-1 overall and 2-2-0 in SUNYAC play. The Bears improve to 4-6-1, 1-2-0.
Trailing 2-0 late in the first half, Oswego began having some great opportunities. In the 32nd minute, Allison Dwyer tried a shot that caught the crossbar, denying Oswego a goal. With under two minutes left in the half, the crossbar was the Lakers' nemesis again, as Bailey Waterbury dribbled past multiple defenders. Waterbury finally settled dead center at the top of the box and ripped a shot that was out of the Potsdam goalie's reach, but the shot found the crossbar, stopping another chance.
In the 83rd minute, Nicole Perniciaro had a nice touch to Emily Gleason who fired a shot but the keeper was able to make the save. The last opportunity of the afternoon came on some good passing as this time Gleason started the movement. Gleason sent a pass to Amanda Woods who dribbled until lfinding a cutting Nikki Liadka down the right side. Liadka, one of the nation's best scorers, crossed a hard shot towards the left post, just narrowly miss the net and careening out-of-bounds wide.
Potsdam scored both of its goals in the first period within four minutes of each other. The first came on a long strike from just inside the midfield circle over the Laker goalkeeper. Its second goal came just inside the left corner of the box as the Bears player turned her back on the Oswego defender and spun for a shot with her right foot, finding the back of the net.
The Lakers will return to action at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, when they host Buffalo State in a SUNYAC contest on Alumni Weekend.
