Kate Randazzo of the Oswego State women’s ice hockey team has been named the inaugural Northeast Women’s Hockey League (NEWHL) Scholar Athlete of the Year. Randazzo’s award was voted on by the NEWHL’s athletic communication directors and is a reflection of both her academic and athletic performances.
The sophomore, who is majoring in biology and minoring in health science, has achieved a 3.95 cumulative GPA. Randazzo’s GPA was the highest among those competing in the 2018 NEWHL Championship game, earning her the NEWHL Elite Academic Award as well. The Ancaster, Ont. native was also previously recognized for her academic success during her freshman year, when she was named to the American Hockey Coaches Association’s Scholar Athlete List.
On the ice, the defender earned the All-Conference First Team accolade for her athletic performance. Randazzo placed second on the Lakers in assists (14) and points (19). She opened the season by dishing out a career-high four assists in Oswego’s 5-0 shutout of New England College on Oct. 27. Randazzo’s performance in the 2017-18 season helped Oswego to an appearance in the first-ever NEWHL Championship Title Game.
