Brian Sortino has earned All-America status for the first time in his career, as D3hoops.com named him to its third team. In all, 25 student-athletes were honored by the site, spread across four teams and a group of honorable mentions.
Sortino led Oswego to its furthest postseason run in program history, making an appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship round of 16. An elusive scorer, the junior ranked ninth nationally in total points (649) and 43rd in points per game (20.9). Those stats were also good for first and second in the SUNYAC, respectively. Sortino's 1135 minutes played paced the country, while his 36.6 minutes per game average was 17th.
Entering this year's campaign, the Fairport, N.Y. native held a single-game career-high of 29 points. On six occasions in 2015-16, Sortino met or surpassed that total, eventually setting a new career-mark with 39 points in an 88-78 overtime win over Delaware Valley College in the opening round of the NCAA tournament on March 4.
A multi-dimensional player, the guard also ranked first for the Lakers in assists per game (3.3) and total steals (28).
The All-America Third Team selection adds more honors to an already award-filled season for Sortino. D3hoops.com recognized the Laker ball-handler with First Team All-East Region on the heels of his All-SUNYAC First Team accolade. He was also named to three All-Tournament squads during the year, collected two SUNYAC Player of the Week honors and three Oswego State Male Athlete of Week citations.
Sortino also hit a milestone during the season, recording his 1,000th career-point against Cortland on Jan. 23. At the end of the year, the All-American had accumulated 1,380 points in his Laker career, placing him 10th all-time in Oswego State men's basketball history.
