News from the Assembly Minority Leader

Statement From Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay

Will Barclay

After a great deal of consideration, I have decided that I will not seek re-election to the 120th Assembly District. I intend to step down as Minority Leader in the coming days, allowing for a smooth transition to new leadership early in the legislative session.

Women's Lacrosse Drops Contest at No. 9 York College

The Oswego State women's lacrosse team suffered a 12-5 loss to host and nationally-ranked York College on Sunday afternoon. York is now 4-1 while the Lakers drop to 1-2 on the 2017 campaign.

Angela Ponto stood tall in net throughout the day for Oswego, earning a new career-high for saves in a single game. The junior goalie stopped 20 shots from York on Sunday, beating Ponto's previous mark of 19 saves against Cortland in a SUNYAC Championship semifinal last season. Ponto also had two ground balls and a caused turnover in the tilt.

On offense, Toni Laneve scored both of the Lakers' first half goals. Her second goal was assisted by Teresa Shattuck with 4:58 left in the opening stanza, pulling Oswego to within three at 5-2. York scored four-straight goals to close the first half with a 9-2 advantage.

In the second half, Oswego and York split six goals evenly, with the Lakers tallying the final three of the contest. All three notches were unassisted, beginning with Gemma O'Kane at 20:02. Shattuck scored the last two for Oswego, coming just 40 seconds apart with less than five minutes remaining in regulation. The sophomore's second goal came by way of a free-position shot.

Oswego's defense – backed by Ponto's stellar goaltending – held York scoreless over the final 25:36. In that span, Ponto made five of her 20 saves. The Lakers caused 11 turnovers over 60 minutes, led by Danielle Walker's three. O'Kane and Kelsey Henderson each had two while Ponto, Shattuck, Marisa Engelbrecht and Montana Garrett had one apiece. O'Kane paced Oswego with three ground balls while Walker and Henderson joined Ponto with two each.

On the draw, the Lakers collected three wins, all by Shattuck.

Oswego will return to action at 4 p.m. on Tuesday when it travels to take on the Kangaroos of SUNY Canton. The game was moved up from Wednesday to Tuesday to avoid potential conflicts with weather.
