The City of Fulton reminds all residents and landscapers that depositing grass clippings, leaves, or other yard waste into city streets or roadways is dangerous and illegal.
Why It Matters:
- Grass clippings on the road can cause serious accidents — especially for motorcycles and bicycles. When wet, clippings create a slick surface similar to ice.
- Yard waste can clog storm drains, leading to localized flooding and increased maintenance costs.
- Depositing yard waste in the road creates a public nuisance and impedes the safe use of our roadways.
What the Law Says:
New York State Vehicle & Traffic Law and Fulton City Code:
Both prohibit the placement or deposit of various waste, materials, rubbish or debris on the roadway and said items must immediately be removed. This includes grass clippings.
Penalties for Violations:
- Violations may be charged under V&T Law, City Code or both and carry penalties up to $250 and/or 15 days imprisonment per violation.
What You Can Do:
- Blow clippings towards your yard and away from the roadway.
- Use approved containers to hold grass clippings and yard waste.
- Place clippings and yard waste in a location designated by code for collection — not in the street.
- Follow the City's yard waste collection schedule (April 1 – December 1).
- Consider mulching clippings back into your lawn.
Together, we can protect public safety, reduce flooding, and keep our community clean and law-abiding.
Thank you for doing your part.
