
The Oswego State wrestling team racked up 33.0 points to place 11th out of 20 teams, ranging from all three divisions of the NCAA, at Sunday's 47th New York State Collegiate Championships, hosted by Cornell University. Four Lakers placed on the day, with four more recording points.
Oswego was led by Daniel Smith's fourth-place finish in the 197-pound weight class, earning 13.50 points. The freshman's day started with an easy major decision of 10-1 over Oneonta's Peter Pjetri. He followed that with a tiebreaker win over Jake Horton of Long Island University-Post in the quarterfinal matchup. After a close sudden victory loss in the semifinal, Smith bounced back with a 3-2 decision over James Benjamin of the University of Buffalo in the consolation bracket's semifinal. In the third-place match, the Adams, N.Y. native fell to Division I Cornell's Jacob Taylor.
Troy Seymour, a 174-pounder, was the Lakers' next highest finisher, claiming sixth and 9.00 points in that weight class. The sophomore one two matches on the day, winning over Erk Adon (Nassau CC) and Frank Affronti (Hofstra) in identical fashion (7-4 decisions).
In seventh place for the 157-pound weight class was Seymour's classmate Tyler Silverthorn. The sophomore went 3-2 on Sunday, with his only two losses coming against Division I competition. Silverthorn's first victory was a fall at 6:55 over RIT's Wonsik Kim. He then beat Erik Beshada of USMMA in a 4-2 decision before locking up the seventh place match due to a medical forfeit.
The last Laker to place was Michael Pistone, grabbing eighth at 174-pounds. Pistone won three-straight matches over the day, winning all three by decisions, including one of the major variety.
Also scoring points for Oswego on the day were Jeff Lombardi, Tim Scalisi, Steve Culbert, Nicholas Swanson, and Anthony Ianno.
The Lakers will take a special trip for their next matchups, facing Franklin and Marshall College and Muhlenberg College next Sunday morning as part of the "Grapple in the Garden," hosted in New York City's famed Madison Square Garden.
