Lakers Lose Two Heartbreaking Five-Set Matches

The Oswego State volleyball team went the distance in both of its matches on Saturday, falling in heartbreaking fashion 3-2 during each. Oswego opened the day by winning the first two sets against Western Connecticut State before the Colonials took three-straight for the win. The host Owls challenged the Lakers next, capturing a back-and-forth five-set tilt.

MATCH ONE – Western Connecticut State 3, Oswego 0 (26-24, 25-22, 11-25, 17-25, 8-15):

Junior Emma Moriarty led the team on offense with 14 kills, just one shy of a career-high. Freshman Ariel Murawski followed suit with 11 kills of her own while Megan Russell ended with nine.

Seniors Kim Cassa and Rachael Ruggaber split the dig responsibilities, finishing with 19 and 18, respectively. Ruggaber also paced the team with three acess while Cassa and junior Lauren Edwards each had two.

Edwards showed the way in the set department, registering 26 assists. Classmate Lindsey Champitto was second on the squad with 15 assists.

MATCH TWO – Keene St. 3, Oswego 0 (25-17, 19-25, 13-25, 25-16, 11-15):

Just one week removed from setting a career-high for kills, Murawski broke her own personal best again, this time with 15. Moriarty continued her good day on attack with 11 more kills in the nightcap. Matching Moriarty's kill total in the later contest was Russell.

The senior duo of Ruggaber and Cassa kept their roles in the second match, passing for 17 and 13 digs, respectively.

Edwards finished just three assists shy of a season-high, recording 29 in the battle.

Oswego will be on the court next when it wraps up SUNYAC action with pool play at Geneseo, starting at 5 p.m. on Friday against Fredonia.
