Lakers Shutout Bears for Second-Straight Day

OS Hockey

The Oswego State women's hockey team shutout the Potsdam Bears for the second-straight day in a 3-0 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Marano Campus Center Arena during the program's alumni weekend. With the win, Oswego is now 4-2-0 overall and 3-1-0 in ECAC West action.

The first period belonged to the Lakers, despite both teams recording 10 shots-on-goal. Oswego scratched the scoreboard first when freshman Olivia Ellis set up teammate Rachel Lenard for a screaming one-timer past the goalie 14:14 into the first period for her second goal of the season.

Just minutes after the following face-off, Lizzy Marks found Brianna Rice whose shot then found the back of the net with 4:04 remaining in the first.

In the second period, the Lakers outshot the Bears, 12-6, but were unable to add to their lead. Oswego's Ellis received a pass in front of the net that ricocheted off the forward's skate and went wide right, nearly sending Potsdam to a 3-0 deficit.

Oswego would eventually get its third goal, however, thanks to Alexa Aramburu's first score of the season off a power-play opportunity 10:56 into the third period. Teammates Rice and Erika Truschke were credited with the assists on the tally.

Senior goalie Bridget Smith was stellar between the pipes against the Bears, recording 28 saves over three periods of play. The Hamburg native didn't allow a single goal for the second time in as many day, earning her ninth career shutout.

The women's hockey squad will return to the ice to host Hamilton College for a 2 p.m. face-off on Tuesday.
