The nationally-ranked Oswego State men's ice hockey team will host its annual Whiteout Weekend – when fans are encouraged to wear white – on Friday and Saturday, with Saturday's contest yielding a special celebration. During the first intermission, Oswego will recognize the 10th anniversary of the college's only team national championship by honoring several 2006-07 teammates on the ice.
On March 17, 2007, the Lakers captured its only team national championship in any sport with a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory against Middlebury College in Superior, Wisc. In the overtime, Ryan Koresky pushed the puck out of the Oswego zone and found Garren Reisweber along the right-wing boards. Reisweber's speedy rush beat a Panther defenseman and he deked a pokecheck attempt by the goalie before sliding the puck into the vacant net to claim the national title.
The Saturday game begins at 7 p.m. and features No. 2/2 Oswego's arch-rivals, the Plattsburgh Cardinals. Plattsburgh and Oswego met in November, with the Lakers coming out on top by a score of 4-1. After the Cardinals tied the game at 1-1 with 5:57 to play in the first, Andrew Barton supplied Oswego the eventual game-winner on a power-play just 1:32 later. Oswego added one goal in each of the next two periods – one from Chris Waterstreet and the other from Mitchell Herlihey – to mark the tilt in the win column.
Whiteout Weekend begins with a 7 p.m. puck drop on Friday between Oswego and the Potsdam Bears. On Nov. 18, the Lakers and Matt Zawadzki shutout the Bears 6-0 on the road. The senior goaltender made 27 saves in the outing while six different Lakers were able to score, including extra-man tallies from senior classmates Matt Galati and Stephen Johnson.
