Montagna, Hulshof and Herlihey Pace Lakers in Win

OS Hockey

The Oswego State men's ice hockey team improves its win streak to four in a row as it defeated Morrisville 6-2 at the Marano Campus Center Arena on Friday night. With the win, the Lakers improve to 14-2-3 on the season and 9-1-1 in the conference. Morrisville goes to 7-9-5 overall, 5-6-2 in the SUNYAC.

It was quite the night for Oswego's second line, consisting of Mitchell Herlihey, Mike Montagna and Shawn Hulshof, as together, they combined for 14 points on the evening. Herlihey got the night going as he lobbed a pass over the defenders head to put Montagna in for a one-on-one with the goalie. Montagna made no mistake, as he slipped the puck five-hole, giving the Lakers a 1-0 lead with 10:06 remaining in the first. The line continued to wreak havoc in the second period converting on a power-play just 3:32 into the stanza. Gertsakis ripped a shot from the blue line that Hulshof attempted to finish, but was ultimately netted by Herlihey. Just over three minutes later Herlihey repaid the favor, feeding Hulshof for an easy put-away during a two-on-one break. The line combined for two more in the third, first Montagna from Herlihey and Hulshof at the 6:54 mark and then Herlihey from Hulshof and Montagna with 2:51 remaining in regulation. Herlihey ended the night with two goals, three assists, Montagna with two goals, two assists and Hulshof with one goal, four assists.

The Lakers other goal came from defender Stephen Johnson, as he was able to skate coast-to-coast and beat the goalie between the legs for Oswego's fifth goal at the 4:56 mark.

Offense wasn't the only things powering the Oswego tonight as the Laker defense was impeccable through the second and third periods. The squad held the Mustangs shot-less throughout the entire second period and only allowed 17 shots in total. Gilbert ended the night with 15 saves.

Men's ice hockey will return to the Marano Campus Center at 7 p.m. tomorrow for a rematch with Morrisville.
