The Oswego State men`s lacrosse team battled tough at Plattsburgh but eventually dropped a 16-11 decision to the host Cardinals on Saturday afternoon. Oswego's loss drops the team to 4-6 on the year and 0-3 in conference tilts while the Cardinals improve to 9-4, 2-2.
The Lakers jumped on the Cardinals early, scoring the game's first two goals over the first eight minutes. Connor Khammar tallied the first at 10:20 before DJ Sellick put home a pass from Cody Hoose at 6:46.
Plattsburgh was able to erase the deficit in the next two minutes but Khammar was at it again shortly thereafter. After the Cardinals were whistled for a slash at 4:33, Khammar was a beneficiary of a Nick Giampaolo assist as he notched the go-ahead man-up goal at 4:04.
The Cardinals were able to again knot the score but Khammar would not be outdone by the opponent, giving the Lakers a 4-3 edge at 1:34 of the first quarter. Matt Palmer was credited with an assist on the play.
With under a minute to play in the opening period, Plattsburgh would even the score at 4-4 to end the back-and-fourth quarter.
Plattsburgh started the second quarter with four-straight goals but Oswego would close the gap before halftime. Brady Hoose assisted on a Giampaolo goal at 3:16 before his older brother Cody cut the Cardinal lead to 8-6 with an unassisted goal at 1:15. That score would hold until the end of the second period.
Oswego cut the advantage to one goal as Khammar found Giampaolo at 9:43 of the third. Plattsburgh pushed the lead to two again but Khammar assisted on his second-straight goal, this time feeding Matt Palmer. That was the closest Oswego would get the rest of the way as the Cardinals ended the period on a five-goal run.
Khammar finished with a six-point outing to lead the Lakers, scoring four goals while assisting on two others. Giampaolo and Cody Hoose both finished with three point games while Palmer finished with a goal and a helper.
Wyatt Russo took the loss in net, stopping eight Cardinal shots over the 60 minutes.
The Lakers will return to action at 4 p.m. on Monday when they host Elmira College in a nonconference contest.
