Oswego's Lombardi, Reed and Mathews Place at 50th NYSCC

The Oswego State wrestling team participated in the 50th New York State Collegiate Championships on Sunday afternoon – hosted by Cornell University.

Three Lakers were named All-State by the end of the championships, with fourth-, seventh- and eighth-place showings between the trio.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Jeff Lombardi placed fourth at 197-pounds with a 2-2 record on the day.
  • The senior opened with an 8-0 decision over his LIU-Post counterpart before ousting his Oneonta opponent with a 15-6 major decision in the quarterfinals.
  • In the semifinal, Lombardi fell to Division I Columbia University's Sam Wustefeld before dropping the 3rd-place match to NYU's Jack La Corte.
  • In the heavyweight class, Bryce Reed claimed seventh place with a 3-2 record on the afternoon.
  • Reed began with back-to-back major decisions, beating Oneonta's Matthew Doty 16-6 before shutting out SUNY Sullivan's Tom Hubmaster, 13-0.
  • The junior's other victory came in the consolation bracket's fourth round, battling to a 3-1 decision against Jamestown Community College's Nick Jones.
  • Isaac Mathews matched Lombardi with a 2-2 mark during the event, good for eighth place in his weight class.
  • The 165-pounder started in grand fashion with an 18-1 technical fall over RIT's Vincent Buscemi.
  • After a loss to an NYU opponent, Mathews bounced back with a 12-7 triumph over Brockport's Matthew Kline.
  • Also picking up two wins on the day was Troy Seymour, the nationally-ranked 174-pounder.
  • Seymour's first win came by way of pin at 2:25 against Brockport's Daniel Emblidge.
  • He then downed Merchant Marine's William Sims with an 8-4 decision.
  • William Hardin fought tough in the 141-pound consolation bracket after losing his first bout of the day.
  • The freshman produced three-consecutive falls in consolation rounds two, three and four before narrowly suffering his second loss of the day, 8-7, in the fifth round.
  • Josh Bressette (149), Joey Bush (157) and Evan Corso (141) each finished the day with a win.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Lakers will proceed with their season after the Thanksgiving break, heading to Rochester, N.Y for a 9:d0 a.m. start at the 53rd RIT Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 8.
