Oswego's Seymour Bows Out of NCAA Championships

Oswego's Seymour Bows Out of NCAA Championships

Troy Seymour of the Oswego State wrestling team went 1-2 on Friday as he bowed out of the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships. Seymour entered Friday unseeded but ranked No. 9 in the 174-pound weight class in the latest NWCA poll. The junior picked up a 6-0 shutout between a pair of losses to higher-ranked individuals.

His triumph on the day came in a bout against fellow unseeded wrestler from Baldwin Wallace University, Justin Ransom. After a scoreless first period, Seymour started on the bottom in the second, which proved pivotal. The Peru, N.Y. native escaped for a point, recorded two takedowns and racked up more than a minute in riding time to earn his sixth and final point in the shutout victory.

He started the day with a tough 16-1 technical fall against sixth-seeded and national-No. 5 Jake Voss of Coe College. In the final bout of the day for Seymour, he faced fourth-seeded and fourth-ranked Darden Schurg of Wabash College. An early takedown by Seymour did not hold as Schurg quickly escaped and recorded a takedown to gain a lead he would never surrender. Seymour would earn a point for an escape late in the match but Schurg went on to a 12-3 major decision.

Seymour closes the season at 25-10 with a conference title and All-Region accolades under his belt. He is the fourth Laker to qualify for the national tournament in the past two season.
