Oswego State softball drops pair at Plattsburgh

OS SoftballThe Oswego State softball team (6-12, 3-5 SUNYAC) dropped a pair of conference contests to Plattsburgh (16-10, 6-4) by the scores of 6-0 and 5-4 Sunday afternoon, April 14.

The Laker offense was stymied in the first game, managing just one hit, while the Cardinals scored all six runs in the third. Samantha Capobianco delivered the key hit of the frame with a three-run home run that cleared the center field fence.

Sarah Thayer (Sr., Winthrop, N.Y.) suffered the loss, giving up six runs on eight hits to go along with two strikeouts and four walks. Ashley Marshall recorded the win after striking out eight and not allowing a hit over the first 5.1 innings. Morgan Anderson closed out the game in the circle for Plattsburgh, notching two strikeouts and allowing one hit.

Oswego State turned things around in the top of the first of game two when Alexis Nasca's (Fr., Hamburg, N.Y.) sacrifice fly to right field scored Sammie Schroeter (Sr., Schenectady, N.Y.). The Cardinals answered with a run in their half of the inning.

Plattsburgh added four runs in the second when Kerry McCarty ripped a two-RBI double into left field followed by a two-run shot from Brianna Clarke to take a 5-1 lead.

Oswego State capitalized on a Cardinal throwing error in the third, as Dee Apps (Jr., Camillus, N.Y.) and Tori Trovato (Fr., Fulton, N.Y.) scored to cut the deficit in half. The Lakers pulled to within one run when Justine Abramowski's (So., Levittown, N.Y.) single up the middle plated Apps when she led off the fourth with a single.

Oswego State tried to mount a rally in the sixth and seventh innings, but was unable to get a runner on base.

Nasca registered the loss after tossing a complete game with five earned runs on 10 hits. She also struck out two Cardinals and walked two. Samantha Moss gave up four runs, two of which were earned, on four hits over 4.1 innings for the win, while Ashley Marshall surrendered just one hit over the final 2.2 innings to record the save.
