Oswego State women's basketball defeats Cortland for first time since 2006

OS BasketballThe Oswego State women's basketball team (13-4, 7-3 SUNYAC) held the Cortland (6-10, 4-6 SUNYAC) offense to just 11 points in the first half, causing 11 turnovers in the stanza en route to a 51-35 home win Saturday night, Jan. 26.      It was only the fourth time in program history the Lakers have topped the Red Dragons and the first time since the 2006 SUNYAC Championship game. Jenn Robbins (Jr., Geneva, N.Y.) came off the bench and led Oswego State in scoring with 12 points, making four of her five attempts from downtown.
The Lakers started the game on a 10-0 run, keeping the Red Dragons off the scoreboard for the first 6:11 of the contest. A Brittany Rando three-pointer got the Cortland offense started, but turnovers cost the Red Dragons valuable chances on the offensive end. Lauren Nunziato (Jr., West Sand Lake, N.Y.) scored all nine of her points in the first eight minutes of the game, giving Oswego State an early 13-3 edge.
Cortland's Caysea Cohen recorded a layup with 8:18 left in the half to pull the game to 16-9, but the Red Dragons didn't register another point until the waning seconds of the half. Oswego State led 25-11 at the half.
The Red Dragons worked the deficit down to nine just under five minutes into the half, but the Laker defense blanked them for nearly five minutes to build a 14-point lead. Oswego State stretched the lead to as much as 24 points before the Red Dragons scored 10 straight points to bring the lead down to 49-35 with 1:30 left in the game. The Lakers broke the press a few more times to seal the victory.
Oswego State forced 21 Cortland turnovers and held the Red Dragons to 27.1 percent shooting in the contest. The Lakers also held Cortland leading scorer Megan Touhey scoreless.
Cohen led the Red Dragons with 12 points. Meagan Stover (Sr., Lake George, N.Y.) filled up the stat sheet with eight points, three rebounds, five steals and two blocks.
The Lakers will host the Geneseo Knights on Tuesday< Jan. 27, at 6 p.m.
