Oswego Takes Second Loss on Sunday

OS Hockey

The Oswego State men's ice hockey team fell 4-3 to visiting Southern New Hampshire University despite outshooting the Penmen 42-22 at the Marano Campus Center Arena on Sunday. It is just the Lakers second loss of the season, going to 10-2-2 while the Penmen improve to 6-7-1.

Southern New Hampshire started the scoring at 8:56 of the first with a goal by Jim O'Connor. Just under eight minutes later, Alex Botten answered with a power-play goal at 16:50 from Matt Galati and Shawn Hulshof to knot the score at 1-1. The Penmen tallied a late goal in the period, scoring a shorthanded goal with a second left in the Laker power-play and less than five second to go in the first.

In the second period, action went Southern New Hampshire's way, scoring back-to-back power-play goals just 1:11 apart to extend its lead to 4-1. That spread would last heading to the final intermission.

Oswego came alive in the second half of the third period, as Hulshof scored and extra-man goal at 11:46 off assists from Botten and Galati. Five minutes later, Botten notched his second of the day from Kenny Neil and Mac Scott.

The Penmen were whistled for tripping with 2:20 to play and Oswego pulled its goalie to have a 6-on-4 over the last minute. Southern New Hampshire goalie Ryan Slatky was able to corral a few chances from the Lakers and hold on for the victory.

Oswego used two goalies on the day, with Mackenzie Sawyer getting the start and loss in 27:02 of work.Justin Gilbert relieved Sawyer after the Penmen's third score and allowed just one goal over the final 32:58, collecting nine saves to match Sawyer's total number of stops.

The Lakers will return to action at 7 p.m. on Friday when they hit the road to face nonconference opponent Elmira College.
