Oswego Women's Hockey Falls to Plattsburgh in Inaugural NEWHL Title Game

The Oswego State women's ice hockey team suffered a 6-0 setback to the No. 1/2 Plattsburgh Cardinals in the first-ever Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) Championship game. The loss concludes the Lakers' season at 12-13-2 while Plattsburgh improves to 23-2-2 and earns the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Championship.

Senior Mariah Madrigal notched 48 saves in the contest, matching her career-high that she set in the Lakers' 3-2 victory over then-No. 1/1 and unbeaten Plattsburgh on Nov. 20, 2016.

Olivia Ellis and fellow senior Victoria Blake were named to the All-Tournament Team. Ellis led the team in shots with four while sophomore Kate Randazzo had three.

The teams were even for the first eight minutes before the hosts broke through on a power play at the 8:33 mark on a goal by Courtney Moriarty. The top line for the Cardinals would put up four goals in the first two periods of the contest to take control.

The faceoff battle was even with both teams winning 31, but Plattsburgh owned the shot category, 54-23. Aside from the opening goal, neither team was effective on the power play, with Oswego going 0-for-3 and the Cardinals tallying a 1-for-4 mark.
