The Oswego State wrestling team had a stellar first day at the Budd Whitehill Division III Duals, held at Lycoming College on Friday.
Oswego opened the day by knocking off No. 18 Wesleyan University 21-17, slipped up 28-13 in its second matchup against The College of New Jersey before capping the day with a 28-14 triumph over Ohio Northern University. With the 2-1 afternoon, the Lakers are now 4-3 in duals on the year.
On Saturday, the Whitehill Duals will continue with Oswego facing familiar foe Cortland at 10:30 a.m. in the 5th place through 8th place bracket. On the other side of the bracket are Springfield College and University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, one of which Oswego will compete against to conclude the weekend.
OSWEGO 21, No. 18 WESLEYAN 17:
Oswego used five-straight weight class wins to upset the nationally-ranked Cardinals. Rocco Russo started the streak with a 9-2 decision at 149. Joey Bush followed that with a 13-1 major decision at 157 before Alex Herringshaw earned a technical fall 16-0 at 165. The 174-pound Troy Seymour kept the Laker fortunes running with a nail-biting 5-4 finish before Jeff Lombardi wrapped the streak with a 4-2 victory at 197. Jack DelDuca was Oswego's other points in the 21-17 win, collecting at 7-4 decision in the day's first weight class (125).

In the Lakers' second meeting of the day, Russo, Herringshaw and Lombardi all picked up their second wins. Russo registered a 5-3 decision, Herringshaw picked up four team points with a major decision (14-3) and Lombardi had the highlight in the loss, a pin in 4:03.

Oswego bounced right back into the win column in its final bouts, capitalized by Evan Corso's pin in just 31 seconds in the 133-weight class. Herringshaw and Russo made it three for the day, with the former winning by 6-2 decision and the later scoring a major, 14-3. Seymour made it multiple victories on the day as well, allowing just one point in a 5-1 decision at 174.
