Richer, Herlihey, Madrigal Earn Conference Honors

The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has selected Mitch Herlihey of the No. 3/4 Oswego State men's ice hockey team as its Athlete of the Week and David Richer as its Goalie of the Week for the week ending on Feb. 11. Mariah Madrigal of the Oswego State women's ice hockey team has also been named the Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) Goalie of the Week.

Herlihey's pair of goals on Friday against Geneseo earned him the title of being the 56th player in Laker history to score 100 career points. Richer's 21 saves in the same contest combined with Herlihey's firepower propelled Oswego to victory in a key SUNYAC matchup.

Richer's dominance in the net was highlighted by the level of difficulty Geneseo's offense provides. Going into Friday's matchup Geneseo held the highest scoring offense in the conference, ranking fourth in the nation until Richer's allowance of only two goals turned the tables.

Herlihey's initial goal against Brockport the next day and secondary assist later on proved helpful towards the Lakers cause once again as they earned another crucial in-conference victory. In this contest Richer would also turn in an impressive 34 saves, while playing all 60 minutes in the contest.

Madrigal earned her third shutout of the year on Friday afternoon, posting 23 saves across 60 minutes played. The only goal she surrendered over the weekend was the next day, during the second period of a home matchup against Cortland which Oswego would win 4-1.

Richer, Herlihey and the men's team hit the ice next at 7 p.m. on Feb. 16. against the 9-9-5 Potsdam Bears in the Marano Campus Center Arena. Madrigal and the women's team will faceoff at the same time, on the same day on the road in Potsdam, N.Y.
