The Oswego State wrestling team stands in sixth place – of 19 teams – after the first day of the NCAA Mideast Regional championship.
Three Lakers are in line to compete for the title in their respective weight classes on Sunday. In the 133-lb weight class, Evan Corso – the seven seed – advanced to the semifinal round with a 14-10 decision over No. 8 Messiah College's Hunter Harris, who was seeded No. 2 in the bracket. Prior to the upset, Corso earned an 18-2 tech fall in the first round.
In another thrilling bout, Rocco Russo earned the 6-3 seed upset after taking out Dempsey King from RIT in overtime. The freshman collected a takedown in the extra frame to earn a sudden-victory 10-8 win.
The top seed in the 184-lb weight class, undefeated Jordan Bushey (33-0), earned a trio of victories on the day. In the first two rounds, the freshman earned a pair of major decisions. First a 14-1 decision over Anthony Cole-Young from Muskingum University and then a 10-1 decision over Kevin Khoma of John Carroll University. In the quarterfinals, Bushey dominated Elizabethtown College's Rocco Hladney, earning a fall in 2:12.
Troy Seymour (165), Trevor Hoffmier (174) and Joey Bush (149) will all compete in the consolation bracket on Sunday. Each have advanced to the top 8 in the tournament.
Action will pick up beginning at 10 a.m. on Sunday from York College in Pennsylvania.
